The Original Flags

$1,350.00

I made these flags "en plein air" as an artist-in-residence with North Cascade Glacier Climate project. Backpacking with materials from cut-up old jeans to yarn and a needle enabled me to create to a soundtrack of calving ice and gurgling glacial runoff. I aimed to capture both my feeling of immersion in each place and the measurements from the scientists showing rates of the glaciers' recession. White flags evoke surrender, strings of flags evoke prayer, and these flags represent a bit of both: surrender to all we can't control and hope that we can unite in action.

Size: ~120" (minimum) x ~12"

Medium: mixed media (yarn, thread, paint, pen, cotton canvas, cordelette)
