Cozy Dorm Studio Tour

My past mini-studios have included some bins under the bed in our old van, a tiny nook in our Golden attic apartment, a camp cabin porch on a Maine lake, and now: this cozy cinderblock room in our faculty apartment in a high school boys’ dorm in the north country of New Hampshire. While it’s not the forever dream (hey linoleum floors and icky ceiling tiles), I’m very grateful for it and quite at home here for the moment.

Above: An in-progress hoop. // Used journals, etc. // Thread organization in a neat rusty thing found at a local thrift store (the Purple Peacock). // A corner — the walls were all pale pink when we moved in, so I painted one dark navy. I made the desk with a giant particle board plus some 2x4s and hairpin legs.

Above: Bench is Facebook marketplace; pillow is custom made by my mom. Blanket is a wedding gift from Coco + Noah. Runner hanging on the right is Tawa Threads. Upper-right framed piece is Kika Macfarlane, and reminds me of two summers ago in Wyoming. The Woodland Press is a favorite project I did with elementary school students, the MDI map is from our invites, and the upper-middle doodles are from my journal — all of these were printed at Directangle Press in Bethlehem. The final lower-left doodles are one of my first in-print projects: a Hatcher pass reflection from my American Alpine Club days.

Above: Shelving — bins from assorted spots; the Round Hill Farms wooden bin stores yarn balls and was my mom’s. // A reminder from my sweet sewing machine. // Some of my current palette on a little stool thrifted from Lonesome Woods in Bethlehem, NH.

Above: Tote stitched in 2022. Closet storage ft. crooked shelves I added and a plastic bin I’ve had since freshman year of college. Curtain was a wall of my Lander craft fair booth two summers ago.

Above: Stitching progress. // Pin bin made by Sarah, age 8, a beloved student in my class last year.

Above: Inspo ft. Orion, Trails Magazine, Adventure Journal, and Sage. // Bulletin board inspo ft. a really old Mountain Gazette cover, a Claire Longcope print, an Amanda Sandlin print, a The Far Woods fabric print, an Emily Elizabeth Miller Eat Racists sticker, a teacher-example leaf pressing drawing from school, some lavender, and past stitchings. The disco ball is from our wedding.

So our stuff will no longer fit in a van and a Subie, which gives me mixed feelings, but in transitioning to a mostly-work-from-home life I feel so lucky to be able to nest. Do you have a studio space you love, or other artists you turn to for studio space inspiration? Let me know in the comments. <3
